The ceremony for lieutenant Howard was brief. The concept of mortality and the danger of their mission wasn’t something the crew liked to consider, so having to attend a reminder of their vulnerability to the perils of being in space, of being so far from home and fighting aliens and their robots, was a sobering experience.

Torres said a few words, extoling the virtues of a capable man, a good officer, finishing by saying that he was a credit to the UN and a loss to their crew. The lieutenant’s body wasn’t on display, nor was the archaic necessity of having to eject his body into the void enacted. A little-known secret of all UN ships was that they all possessed an incinerator which rendered the body of the lieutenant to fine dust in minutes. His sealed ashes would be transported back to Earth when they returned, as the old practice of burying a body in the ground was as outdated as having to perform a burial at sea to prevent the body turning rotten. That naval practice, once done out of necessity and later for ceremony, was abandoned long ago.
